The work
Each of these came to us for the same reason, a house with real quality in it that had stopped working for the people living in it. Some are protected, some are not. What they have in common is the care they needed, not their age.
You will find each one in full, the building as it was given to us, what the client asked for, and what it is now.

Lucca, Tuscany
An apartment in a palazzo
“We are looking for a home where we can gather our family and friends.”

That was the whole brief, and it was the right one, because the apartment already knew how to do it and had simply stopped.
It is the piano nobile of a sixteenth century palazzo, protected, with every intervention passing through the Belle Arti. Nearly half of it is a single room, a salone of a grandiose proportions, which is less a living room than a small piazza with a ceiling.
The one substantial addition is a timber mezzanine carrying a bathroom and a wardrobe, turning a single purpose bedroom into an office and sleeping area. It is entirely self supporting, it simply kisses the original walls and does nothing else to them.

Geneva, Switzerland
A room between inside and outside
The brief was for a room that sits between inside and outside, one that feels like the garden but can be used in every month of the year, and the picture the owner gave us was a very precise one, a cigar on a Saturday afternoon with the bar inside the house still within reach.
It is not a conservatory and it is not a terrace. It is a proper room, shaded by a roof deep enough to keep the afternoon sun off it, and it belongs to the house rather than sitting against the front of it.
